Meshrep (3/3): UNESCO and the continuation of Meshrep

This is the third and final part of the Meshrep seminar series with Mukaddas Mijit. This week, she is joined by Professor Rachel Harris from SOAS University of London, who also specialises in ethnomusicology. The talk focuses on how Meshreps became an intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding (via UNESCO), the effects of this categorisation, and the continuation of Meshrep in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

Mukaddas Mijit is an ethnomusicologist, filmmaker, dancer and music manager with a PhD and research background in ethnomusicology, focusing on Uyghur dance and music. Read more about her on her website.

Rachel Harris is a professor in Ethnomusicology and Director of Research in the SOAS School of Arts. She conducts research on China and Central Asia, particularly on the Uyghurs, and has conducted fieldwork in these areas for over 20 years. Her current research interests focus on intangible cultural heritage, music and identity formation, soundscapes and state projects of territorialization. Read more about her on SOAS.

Meshrep (2/3): Filming Meshrep with Tahir Hamut

This is the second of a 3-part seminar series by our guest, Mukaddas Mijit, on Meshrep and its role in Uyghur cultural identity formation. In this talk, Mukaddas invites Tahir Hamut, a well known poet and filmmaker, to speak about his experiences filming Meshreps.

Mukaddas Mijit is an ethnomusicologist, filmmaker, dancer and music manager with a PhD and research background in ethnomusicology, focusing on Uyghur dance and music. Read more about her on her website.

 

Tahir Hamut was born in 1969 in a small town near Kashgar, in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. His first poem was published in 1986, and in the last three decades he has become one of the foremost modernist poets writing in Uyghur. Since the late nineties he has worked as a film director and has founded his own production company, Izgil, which specializes in documentaries, advertisements and music videos. His work has previously appeared in English translation in Words Without Borders, Crazyhorse, Asymptote, Gulf Coast, Berkeley Poetry Review and elsewhere.

Meshrep (1/3): An Introduction with Mukaddas Mijit

This is the first of a 3-part seminar series by our guest, Mukaddas Mijit, on Meshrep and its role in Uyghur cultural identity formation. In this talk, Mukaddas goes through the basics of what a Meshrep is and how it functions in Uyghur society, using examples from videos taken during her field research. The second half of the video is a recording of the Q&A session and discussion with the guests who attended the online seminar!
